Effective Home Page Design for your website - What is your website About?
11.01.2010
What is your website about? This is the question any web designer should ask before designing a website home page. When a new visitor lands on your website, the first thing they want to know is if they are in the right place for information they are looking for. They have probably came on your site with some goals in mind. So before spending any time, they need to determine if there is any possibility of success.
You cannot present all information on a single page of your website and tell a new visitor everything that is on your site. You can at least give them some hints about what they can find on your site. For example, if you offer web design services, make it clear on your site. Always make sure that information is immediately obvious to anyone visiting your site.
An easy way to do is through a logo for example. I will point to my own logo as an example. The website name is Discount Web Design. The last tow words (web and design) are descriptive words of what we do and the site is all about. It’s easy to understand what we are in the web design field and propose affordable website design services.
There are other ways you can answer the what is this about question. You can chose domain name containing your main keywords. If you offer website design services, use the keyword website design in the domain name. You can also write a sentence or two telling people exactly what your site is about. The goal here is to quickly let the visitor know they’re in the right place. If your visitor can’t tell what your site is about in a few seconds they’ll be off to the next site.
One last thing to consider here is how well your website is branded. Everybody knows Nike and have a pretty good idea what Nike is about. As long as we see the name on their home page, we know we are in the right place. Most of us though don’t have the brand of Nike and will have to do a little more. That’s one of the advantages of building a brand.
